Understanding and Supporting Grief and Bereavement Course



By the end of this course, you will:

  • Be able to define grief, bereavement, loss and mourning
  • Be aware of the different types of loss which may affect children and young people
  • Understand the factors which may affect children and young people who experience a loss or bereavement
  • Know the different ways that loss and bereavement may affect a child or young person
  • Recognise misconceptions about grief and loss
  • Be aware of patterns of grief reaction
  • Recognise reasons why we need to be sensitive to the needs of those around us when supporting loss
  • Be aware of different cultural needs and how these many affect loss and bereavement
  • Recognise the importance of emotional literacy when supporting loss and bereavement
  • Recognise the importance of discussing feelings
  • Understand different ways to talk about loss and bereavement
  • Be aware of resources which you may make available for children
  • Reflect on considerations when supporting children & young people
  • Be aware of traumatic loss
  • Be aware of compassion fatigue and how to meet your own needs
  • Be aware of wider support available to children and their families
  • Know a range of national charities which can support families
