Children’s Activity: Challenge Limiting Beliefs

Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs are negative thoughts or beliefs which hold us back from achieving things, or trying things in life. They can be about anything, from ourselves and our personalities, to our abilities and skills, to the world or other people. They keep us in a negative mindset, where they can cause chaos as they prevent us from trying new experiences or taking opportunities.

Limiting beliefs can be learnt from others, through persistent negative feedback or from negative experiences. They are our brain’s way of ‘trying’ to keep us safe, but they can have a drastically negative effect on us. Limiting beliefs mean that our view of situations may be distorted or incorrect. For instance, a negative experience with others may lead to a limiting belief ‘everyone hates me’ which means if someone does not behave how we want them to, we automatically dismiss them or disconnect causing us social isolation and embedding our belief. Therefore, learning to challenge them is an important step forward.
